A Chase After Wind [formerly “Vanity of Vanities”; rev. 1-18-2017]

A Chase After Wind

Purpose–where is the purpose
To all the work? All the toil?
The sweat of my brow?

Why do I do this?
Why is it more important
To do than that or nothing?

Q’oheleth! What do you know
That you are not telling me?
Am I chasing after wind?

Answers come after the end
And this life is toil and want.
Answers, but not in this life!

The purpose, to find it,
To learn it, requires breaking
Through the wall of death,

Requires a discovery
Or a witness to revelation
Or a personal experience

Which you will never
Get to tell anyone about
On this side of the wall.

I continue to be insofar
As I labor in vain:
A vexation of spirit!

What does my will matter,
Oh, Q’oheleth, before the assembly?
Either choice, my being mortal, is corrupt!

In Truth, the best poem
About my futility
Is no poem at all.
